Hairfall: Telogen Effluvium

It is a hair disorder characterized by thinning and shedding of hairs due to rapid or early conversion of anagen phase (growth phase) hairs to telogen phase (resting phase) of hair cycle. Effluvium means an acute exaggeration of hair loss due to altered hair cycle. It is a self limiting disorder usually controlled within six month or may last more than that.

Causes:

  • Surgery
  • Major physical trauma
  • Major psychological stress
  • High fever, severe infection or other illness
  • Extreme weight loss
  • Extreme change in diet
  • Abrupt hormonal changes, including those associated with childbirth and menopause
  • Iron deficiency
  • Hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism
  • Some medications.
